2020 Fire Prevention Week October 4-10
Thursday, October 1st, 2020
It is that time of the year again! Time to think about colder months and preventing all the types of fire possibilities that can come along with them!
Every year the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) sets aside one week in October to educate folks about the important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. This year Fire Prevention Week falls on October 4-10 and the theme is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen”.
According to the NFPA website, www.nfpa.org :
- Cooking is the #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries.
- Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen.
- Scald burns are the second leading cause of all burn injuries. Hot liquids from coffee and even microwaved soup can cause devastating injuries.
Cooking
- Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries. Thanksgiving is the leading day for fires involving cooking equipment.
- The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking.
- Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food.
- If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly and stay inside the home.
- Keep anything that can catch fire away from your stovetop.
- Loose clothing can hang down onto stove burners and catch fire. Wear short, close fitting, or tightly rolled sleeves when cooking
- Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove and areas where hot food and drink is prepared or carried.
And finally, a sum of common-sense tips offered up by the NFPA:
- Stay Focused on the food
- Keep cooking areas clear
- Put a lid on it
- Prevent scalds and burns
- Make sure smoke alarms are functioning correctly
