Prepared for Spring Storms?
Monday, April 1st, 2019
We’ve made it to April! With warmer weather on the horizon, so is the possibility of severe storms. Spring storms can often bring heavy winds and hail that can severely damage property. Shall we flash back to 2011, when storms and hail caused millions of dollars worth of damage in East Tennessee? This can cause great stress to the homeowner and everyone involved (even us contractors)! It is always important to be prepared, so here are are some helpful steps to take before and after the storm to prevent those unnecessary headaches.
- Inspect your roof and exterior openings. Poorly maintained roofs are most susceptible to heavy wind and hail. Clear gutters and downspouts so water will be diverted away from your home.
- Prune dead or rotting branches from trees near your home or car that could fall during a storm.
- Review homeowner policy with your agent to ensure you have the proper coverage, and make sure you understand the coverage available should your home incur damages.
- Assemble an emergency kit and home inventory. Flashlights, batteries, first aid kits and drinking water can come in handy should there be a loss of electricity. A written list or video inventory of your home and contents, kept offsite, will also help in the settling of any claims if disaster strikes.
If a storm is approaching, stay up to date on the latest weather conditions and heed any warnings or evacuation orders.
- Tie down or move inside anything that could be blown around such as trash cans, grills and outdoor furniture.
- Move inside and close windows and doors. Lower blinds and close curtains so that if glass is broken, it’s less likely to fly into the house.
- Unplug expensive electronic equipment, and use surge protectors in your home.
- After the storm, look for property damages, broken tree limbs and other debris and avoid walking near hazardous items such as downed power lines.
